SATB Chorus + String Orchestra
Written as a commission by the New Canon Project for the National Endowment of the Arts’s America250 Garden of Heroes Project, Challenger: Ride to Space is a fun and dynamic work for intermediate choir and string orchestra. This piece is written to honor Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, and pulls inspiration from epic sci-fi film scores. Because of her knowledge of robotics, and her aptitude with the robotic arm in training camp, Sally was chosen out of the 6 women in NASA Astronaut Group 8 as the first woman to go to space. The mission of her trip was to deploy and retrieve communication satellites. On this Challenger trip, the ship landed safely, and Sally Ride became one of the most famous women in the country.
Commissioned by the American Choral Directors Association and the American String Teachers Association for the Garden of American Heroes initiative of The New Canon Project. This initiative was made possible with support from the National Endowment of the Arts.
