Suffragette of the Skies, for Grade 5 SATB and String Orchestra, brings Amelia Earhart’s famous 1932 transatlantic solo flight to life. The long journey from the US to Europe had never been attempted by a woman pilot, and despite a fuel leakage problem and a dangerous and icy electrical storm that veered her off course, Amelia landed in a pasture in Ireland, proving to women around the world that it could be done. Regarding the transatlantic flight, Amelia said, “It was, in measure, a self-justification — proving to me, and to any one else interested, that a woman with adequate experience could do it.” 

In addition to making her mark as an accomplished pilot, earning many awards including the
Distinguished Flying Cross, Amelia was actively involved in advocating for women’s rights. She was
outspoken in the women’s suffrage movement, and helped countless women build careers and independence. In 1937, Amelia Earhart bravely attempted to fly around the entire globe, and she mysteriously disappeared in the Pacific Ocean toward the end of the journey. This composition was created to honor the life and legacy of a legendary woman with grit, determination, and compassion.
